Morning Musings

Yesterday as I looked at the start times of the schools in my district, I wondered why elementary schools have the latest start times while the high school has the earliest start time.

Elementary age kids are early risers.  They are rip-roarin’-ready-to-go first thing in the morning.

High school students, on the other hand, are not morning people.  In their defense, their brains are telling them to stay up later while their bodies require as much sleep as infants.

Couldn’t we just switch out their start times?  Would it make for better student learning?

  1. The American Academy of Pediatrics over a year recommended that high school starts later based on results from various studies. Hopefully school districts will listen and change the start times!

    • I knew there were studies proving a later start time for high schools would be valuable. Thank you for sourcing it for me. I agree. Hopefully we will listen and change accordingly.
