Diving into William Wells Brown’s Clotel

I love the novel Clotel by William Wells Brown.  I’ve read it several times, and each time I read it, I learn something new.  Brown published the novel in 1853, and it’s one of the first novels ever published by an African American.  For many years, people considered it the first novel published by an African American, but then the world realized Our Nig by Harriet Wilson was published earlier.

If you’re a lover of 19th Century literature,  African American literature, serially released literature, and particularly if you love the space where those genres coincide, please check out my reading of Brown’s novel on Youtube.  And if you’re not a fan of those genres, please check out my reading anyway, because it just might change your mind.

Click below for chapter one of Brown’s Clotel.  I will release a new successive reading each week.
