Legacy

An ode to remember Dora Mae Miller Cooper

Elegance and class
with Estee Lauder sass.
Steppin’ out and lookin’ fine
Make Johnny say
I’m proud she’s mine,

But put her in a kitchen
with a house coat
and a frying pan
and man –
Can’t get nothin’ like that out of a can.

Creativity ahead of her time,
Wisdom and intelligence
walking in her prime.
Friend to all in need, although –
cross her tribe and find a formidable foe.

Generational influencer.
Seven kids
Fourteen grands
twenty-one great grands
two great great grands

Impacting many more she’ll
never meet,
but who will know her
because a spirit that sweet
lives on.

And that smile.
How many of you
bear witness of that
miracle mile
every time you laugh?

That shadow-chasing,
soul-reviving smile she passed down
through time and love
helping us feel God’s presence
on earth from above.

On eagle’s wings
dipping and diving
yet steadily rising
higher to the sun,
we ride on her shoulders

Sometimes bowed but always strong,
to our future endeavors.
With confidence and faith
we press on and thrive
and live and survive,

Because
she graced us
with
her legacy.

My paternal grandmother, Dora Cooper. Picture dates (I'm guessing) 1940s, maybe 1950s. Retrieved from the cover of her obituary.
