Not an Easy Life

It’s easy not to pay attention to what’s going on around you.  To not know who your elected or appointed officials are.  To not know what they stand for and what they stand against.  To turn off the news because it’s disturbing.  To live as if the decisions other make don’t impact you.  To live as if your decisions don’t impact others.

And I love easy.  I’m sure we all do.

What’s not easy is to see injustice.  To acknowledge it.  To do something about it.  To have an opinion on the state of the society.  To live by the power of your convictions.  To stand up for what’s right even if it means sacrificing your personal comfort.  To have the courage to do the right thing even if you must do it alone.  To fight for those who need it even if their fight isn’t yours.

Today we celebrate the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. because he refused to live an easy life.  Instead he lived by these hard principles and inspired others to do so as well.

And we are all the better for him.
