I once blogged about a student who daily complained that English class is hard.
I didn’t notice until today that she doesn’t complain about the course and assignments as much any more. What made me take notice wasn’t a lack of complaining, to be honest. What forced me to notice was this student’s positive attitude when she walked in today.
She strode in this morning, beaming with confidence, and told me that she had never felt better about writing a paper than she did for her current assignment. She acknowledged that she generally feels uneasy about papers, but today she felt like she had it under control.
I was so happy for her. Knowing that she has increased her confidence in writing thrilled me, and I let her know it. She shrugged off my enthusiasm as the ravings of a somewhat nutty English teacher, but I’m holding on to my pride. Now that she knows she can tackle this, so many more doors will open for her.
What a beautiful thing learning is.
