TB and I were listening to a sermon this morning about the fall of the Babylonian Empire when we had the following conversation.
TB: I think they’ve taken technology too far.
Me: Really? Who are they?
TB: The people who make robots.
Me: Oh. And what is too far?
TB: Robots. They can do too much.
Me: What do you mean by too much?
TB: It’s cool to have robots help with things, but once they start doing one thing, they do everything. First they are building stuff for us, but then it goes too far. When robots are doing everything for us, we don’t learn how to do anything. We need to learn for ourselves. And they can make robots that learn. The only thing we have that robots don’t are emotions. They haven’t made that yet. But I bet they will. Technology. It’s just too far.
I don’t know how the fall of an empire pricked TB to ponder the state of humanity and technology, but I’m glad it did. I wish more of us were having these conversations.
