Being black is like being a mutant.

You have some super cool personal characteristics that you are happy to share with society.  And while society is happy to use you and your personal characteristics for its gain, it isn’t always happy to have you as valued member.

  1. Although I appreciate the comparison ….I have to beg the differ. Being black to Me is
like a Butterfly. I am a Monarch unlike any Monarch or Butterfly in the family. I am distinct, unique and beautifully and wonderfully made. Set free to Serve God’s purpose. And letting God sort it all out

    • I think you stated it beautifully. I agree with you that one aspect of being black (or being alive for that matter), is to live out the purpose God designed specifically for each of us.

I also think being black is like many different things. When I wrote being black is like being a mutant, I had so many different ideas for comparisons of being black that I decided to make “Being Black is Like…” a regular column that I will write.

I love it that you added to the richness of our understanding of blackness. Thank you!

  2. Hey, just a heads up. It’s no coincidence that the two are similar. The mutants (X-Men in particular) were created to emulate the struggle of black people in America. Stan Lee himself has stated this was his statement against bigotry in the 60’s. Also he has gone on record stating that Professor X and Magneto were simply Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. Just thought I’d add that. Nice blog.
