So, I think that everyday at school TB walks on his knees across the blacktop to a pile of dirt.  Then he picks up dirt by the handful and smushes it all over his face.  Then he shoves his face in the dirt.  Then he walks on his knees in the dirt.  Then he drags his hands through the dirt, making sure to get maximum dirt lodged beneath his fingernails.

It’s the only way I can explain the dirty face and fingernails and the dirty, torn knees in so many of his pants.
