Car Rides and Jesus

The car ride to the children’s day program at church was all the way live….

Scene 1: Leaving the house and approaching the car.
Girl: Stop whistling.
Boy: Ok *continues whistling*

Girl: You said you would stop whistling.
Boy: I know *continues whistling*
Girl: *full on whiney scream* Stop whistling! You said you would stop whistling!
Boy: *puckers his face as if to whistle*
Girl: Stop trying to whistle!

Scene 2: In the car.
Girl: Stop trying to whistle!
Boy: *continues face puckering*
Girl: You are annoying me on purpose! I know that’s what you’re doing!
Me: And he’s doing a beautiful job of it, I might add.
Girl: Mommy! *exasperated exclamation*
Boy: Why did you say Mommy meanly? That’s just mean. To say Mommy like that. Meanly.
Husband: Why did you say Mommy?
Boy: To be mean to Mommy. She’s just being mean.
Girl: Aaargh!
Boy: *puckers his face as if to whistle*
Girl: Stop trying to whistle.
Husband: Just stop looking at him.
Me: And think about Jesus.
Girl: I can’t think about Jesus if he keeps trying to whistle at me.

  1. As the sister of a brother who was ALWAYS whistling I can certainly understand the girl’s frustration here. Because of Chad’s constant need to whistle as a youngster I destest whistling to this day. It drives me up the wall.

    • Lisa, The Girl is certainly following your footsteps. The kids are always arguing about whistling. The Boy whistles all the time. Maybe it’s a boy thing. I’m sorry to stir up bad memories. 🙂

      • It must be a boy thing, because I have never felt the need to whistle a tune. Hum, maybe, but never whistle. I find how bothersome it was to me a bit funny…now. 🙂 With way too many years of perspective, I don’t think that Chad ever whistled purposely to get on my nerves…he just really enjoyed whistling. It just became one of those things that would rattle my chains to the point that I will never like whistling.

  2. I absolutely love this conversation… And while Lisa’s Chad may not have whistled to get on her nerves, it sure does look like The Boy does it to annoy The Girl. 😉

    • Oh, The Boy absolutely whistles to get on The Girl’s nerves. I think he stays up at night thinking of new ways to torment her, although in his defense, it is pretty easy to get under her skin. Whistling, however, especially upsets The Girl, because she can’t whistle. This fact is certainly not lost on The Boy.
