Stretching Myself

Hello. I’m Roshaunda, and apparently I write plays. That came as news to me, but in hindsight, it shouldn’t have been a surprise.

In 2019 I wrote a sketch for our Women of God Luncheon. That was the first time I had done anything like that. God has long given me story ideas, and I always create and play out scenarios (with dialogue) in my head, so it makes sense that I ventured into play writing. I loved the process of writing “Pearls of Wisdom,” and, again to my surprise, I cast and directed the production. I didn’t know I had that in me, and even though I really enjoyed it, I didn’t do anything like that again until 2023, when I wrote the Christmas play for my church.

Since then, I’ve written another Christmas play, an Easter play, and I’m currently writing more Christmas and Easter plays, along with some plays based on various 19th C black women. Once I got on a roll, I really got on a roll. It seems God had a lot of things to say through me, and he was waiting patiently, as He does, for me to get on board. I wonder what didn’t get written in the 4-year hiatus I took between writing my first play and my second one. Prayerfully God will redeem that time in the writing I’m doing now.

And I feel so weird telling you all of this. I was going along in my life blissfully not sharing the work I’ve been doing, and then I started my book coaching certification program. What does that have to do with anything? Well, let me tell you.

I’ve been learning about making my work visible. What feels ostentatious and boastful to me (and terrifying – I’m writing this post in fear and trembling) is really just a way for me to let people know what I do and share what I love. It’s a way for me to share myself, and I often find that difficult.

I readily share many facets of myself – my parenting foibles, a smile, a prayer – but I less easily share my creative passions. And frankly, it’s getting more and more difficult to not share them, because I’m spending more and more time pursuing them. And I love that is the case. Since pursuing them reflects how God created me to operate in the world, and it brings me joy, why wouldn’t I share them with you? So here I am sharing and stretching myself.

Recently, my church presented a production for Easter 2025. I wrote the script, Michael Bobo and Amanda Farrell did the musical arrangement, and Erica Franklin directed. A host of people did the choreography and sound and costuming and all the things it takes to bring a production to life. You will find all of their names in the images of the production program (images below).

Oh, I didn’t mention that I danced in the Easter production as well. I’ve been in dance ministry at church for 24 years. That’s some creativity I’ll have to talk about another time.

You’ll see me in some of the dance numbers in the production. You can watch the entire production at the Youtube link embedded below. I hope you do! I’m sure you’ll be blessed!

And that’s my bit of creativity for today!
