Reviewing for the final today, we went over some Romeo and Juliet quotations. While one student answered, another raised her hand. I acknowledged the newly raised hand and told her I’d come to her next. When her turn arrived, she said, and I quote, “Today’s not Friday.”
Fascinating. Why did I assume she had something to add to our discussion of Romeo and Juliet? You would think I would have learned by now, but alas.
I acknowledged her statement, indicating that she correctly deduced the day of the week. Then she added, “You’re wearing jeans, and it’s not Friday.”
I began to understand.
I wear jeans to work every Friday and never any day other than Friday. Until today. Prior to today I wore jeans every single Friday of the school year and only on Fridays did I wear jeans. I apparently ruined my streak, with only one Friday left in the academic year.
And she noticed.
The things my students pay attention to always amaze me, but I also find it sweet.
