The Boy and The Girl had spent an evening with their cousins, which to them is heaven on earth, and The Husband and I naturally asked them about their evening.
Me: What did you do?
TB: We played.
Me: Well, I assumed you played. What did you play?
TB: Hide and Seek and War.
TH: The card game war?
TB: No, it’s this game with weapons. You have a sword….
Both children proceeded to tell us all about war. It seems like hide and seek but with imaginary weapons and some super powers.
TH: Did you make this up?
The Girl and The Boy responded simultaneously.
TG: Yes.
TB: No.
TH: You didn’t make this game up?
The Girl and The Boy begin talking over each other.
TG: Yes, we made it up.
TB: No, we didn’t make it up.
TH: If you didn’t make it up, where did you learn it?
The children finally take turns in their conversation.
TG: We made it up.
TB: No we didn’t. Not today.
TH: But you did make it up?
TG: Yes.
TB: No.
TH: I don’t mean did you make it up today. I’m just saying you guys made it up.
TG: Yes.
TB: No.
TG: Yes we did make it up.
TB: Not just us. Our cousin did, too.
TH: I was talking about all of you. As a group, you made up the game.
TB: Yes. *pause* But we didn’t make it up today. We made it up last time.
TG: No, it was the time before that. It was two times ago.
TB: Yeah, it was two times ago we made it up. I don’t know. I don’t even know what it’s called. It’s just a game.
Me: But you just called it war.
TB: Yeah, we made it up, but it doesn’t even have a name or anything. It’s just a game we play.
